Lecture 1 Hiroyuki Sugaya

Title: Management for Shoulder & Elbow Injuries in Elite Baseball Players: A Japanese Perspective

Recently, more Japanese professional baseball players play in MLB than ever before. Unfortunately, however, soon after beginning their career in the world’s highest competitive league they suffer from elbow injuries serious enough to require them to undergo surgeries in most case. Why do Japanese elite baseball players fall into getting severe injuries upon making the transition to MLB? The reasons could be the amount of resting time in pitching between game for starters, besides that, environmental factors can be come upon our thoughts, which are the difference in the ball used in the MLB and NPB (Nippon Professional Baseball) league, the difference in the inclination and stiffness of the mound between the leagues, and so forth. Doctor Sugaya, however, came to realize some obvious “difference” other than the factors above assumed to be true so far as an answer for the question of early breaking down in Japanese baseball players after making their ways to the MLB. In the lecture, Doctor Sugaya will tell us the “difference” as well as “where to head to” for both leagues in the future.

Lecture 2 Ron Porterfield

Title : In Season Injury patterns in Professional Baseball)

Global approach to the chronic and overuse movements and their effect on the body of a professional baseball player.  Movement issues that start at the ground and work their way up the body mechanical chain.  Patterns developed at the ankle, hip, rib cage, neck, shoulder and wrist.  Stability versus mobility and the need to recognize, what should be tightened and what should be loosened.  There are more upper body injuries in pitchers, where there are more lower body injuries in position players.  Ability to use ground forces through the lower body with proper stability and movement through the core and to the upper body can increase power and reduce injury risk.

Lecture 3 Jamie Reed

Title : Rehabilitation Guidelines Following Thoracic Outlet Innervation)

We will first cover the anatomy most often compromised by overhead throwing specific to TOS. All tests and exams will be demonstrated to differentiate common shoulder and elbow injuries for TOS. Lastly we will talk about conservative rehab programs as well as surgical intervention and the rehab that follows. By the end of the talk, the audience should have a good understanding of TOS and will be a part of their exams on overhead throwing athletes going forward.

Lecture 4 Issei Kamada

Title: Orix Buffaloes training periodization

Orix Buffaloes utilize periodization concept for high baseball performance while reducing the chance of getting injuries.

This presentation will show what Orix Buffaloes periodization is like and hopefully this information would be utilized for your carrier.

Lecture 5 Matt Toth

Title: Lat Injuries in Professional Baseball: A Growing Concern

The PowerPoint will review the anatomy of the latissimus dorsi as well at the how it integrates into other parts of the body.  The talk will also include specific case studies, review of pitching mechanics on film, as well as discuss “team” approach to handling the rehabilitation of a lat injury.  Finally, we will cover current research and trends in MLB in regards to MLB players.  By the end of the talk, the audience should be familiar with the anatomy of the injury, the various classifications of the injury, pitching mechanics that may lead to this injury as well has the various considerations in the rehabilitation process.

Lecture 6 Tory Lindely

Title : Hamstring Strains:  Secondary Prevention and Effective Rehabilitation for Timely Return to Baseball

The significance of injury burden and time loss due to hamstring strains has increased in recent years in many sports, including baseball.  As a result, athletic trainers and athletic therapists have reexamined their approach to lower extremity training, hamstring injury prevention, management, return to play and re-injury risk reduction.  In this presentation, each of these areas of emphasis will be discussed including positional differences in baseball.  Further, every hamstring strain is different and the athletic trainer/therapist must be prepared to take a multi-practitioner and position specific approach to achieve positive outcomes.

Lecture 7 Ron Porterfield

Title: Computerized Injury Tracking System: Why Is It Important

How Professional Baseball in the United States are using Emergency Medical Records and their importance.  Ability to track injury with each individual player, history of injury, lost days, orthopedic and general health.  How this may be used to help lower individual player injury risk.  Ability to have documented evidence of yearly general health, orthopedic health, surgical interventions, diagnostic studies, physician evaluations, injury events, athletic trainer/physical therapist daily treatment notes, allergies, medications.  Provides the ability to look at weekly, monthly, yearly injury trends at various levels of professional baseball, amongst teams, organizations or entire major league baseball entity.  Provides the ability to look into research projects as to what is being seen with injury trends.  Provides a players history to follow them throughout their career and receive consistent care for previous conditions.  Allowing for teams to take on players with knowledge of their previous history for specific health and injury issues.  Documentation to prevent liability risk of medical staff members legally in the court of law.

Lecture 8 Matt Toth

Title : Statistical Review of Tommy John/UCL Repairs in Major League Baseball

Title : Working on for Japanese profesional baseball team as athletic trainer

19 years ago, I returned to Japan as a certified athletic trainer with passion and vision to expand the field of athletic training in Japan. I faced and surprised by many differences between US and Japan, trainersʼ knowledge, background, responsibilities, and how they practice. Knowing those differences, I shifted my mind to integrate beneficial aspects from both countries.

How to prevent from injuries.

How fast I can assist them to return to play.

How I can make the weight training into their routine.

How to improve baseball performance.

How I can build the trust with coaching staff.

How I can educate athletes with good communication skill.

I would like to share practical aspects of what I have done for last 19 years as rehabilitation trainer and training coach in Japanese baseball organization.

Lecture 10 Jamie Reed

Title: Understanding the Role of the Shoulder in Overhead Throwing

This powerpoint will cover the anatomy of the throwing shoulder. We will also discuss the stresses involved in each aspect of the mechanics of throwing and how it relates to shoulder injuries. We will review common shoulder injuries in the baseball pitcher and how they are best treated. Surgical procedures and rehab will be covered as well as the importance of pre-hab and maintenance programs. Lastly, we will cover periodization thru the course of both in-season and offseason for the throwing athlete.
